The Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, has launched a month-long Mental Health Awareness initiative during October–November 2026 in connection with World Mental Health Day 2026, with the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.”
With the guidance and leadership of Dr. Ajeet Sidana, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, GMCH; Additional Director, Mental Health Institute, Chandigarh; and Joint Director, Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), Chandigarh, the initiative is bringing together psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, psychologists, nursing professionals, counsellors, residents and community teams to take mental health conversations closer to where people live, study and work.
The programme has deliberately moved beyond conventional awareness lectures. Its focus is on listening, conversation, early identification, stress management, stigma reduction, recovery, lived experiences, community participation and better services.
As part of the ongoing month-long initiative, a community-based session was conducted today at Anganwadi Centres No. 3 & 4, Sector 56, Chandigarh. The session focused on recognising symptoms of stress, exhaustion and emotional fatigue associated with heavy workloads, along with practical and brief mindfulness and stress-relief strategies that can be incorporated into everyday life. The interactive session was facilitated by Ms. Nidhi Bansal, Medical Social Welfare Officer (MSWO). The emphasis was on simple, practical ways of recognising stress early and taking small steps towards emotional well-being in daily life.
An awareness session on “Recovery Is Possible: Living Beyond Mental Illness” was conducted at Nari Niketan, Sector 26, by Dr. Somaya Tuteja and Dr. Jaswinder Kaur.
A group discussion on “Patient as Partner: Co-Design for Better Care” was conducted by Ms. Babal Preet at the Anganwadi Centre, Sector 56.
